Nigeria Unveils ‘Motherland 2025’ to Boost Tourism & Economy
Nigeria has officially launched ‘Motherland 2025,’ a major cultural and tourism initiative aimed at strengthening the country’s creative economy and establishing it as a premier global travel destination. The ambitious program, spearheaded by the Federal Ministry of Arts, Culture, Tourism, and Creative Economy, was unveiled in Abuja, with government officials, industry leaders, and key stakeholders in attendance.
The ‘Motherland 2025’ initiative seeks to leverage Nigeria’s cultural heritage to attract both domestic and international tourists. According to the Minister of Arts, Culture, Tourism, and Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa, the program will serve as a catalyst for economic growth, creating opportunities for businesses, creatives, and investors in the tourism and hospitality industries.
“Our goal is to showcase Nigeria’s rich heritage, music, fashion, arts, and cuisine on a global stage while fostering meaningful connections with the African diaspora,” Musawa stated during the launch.
- Diaspora City: One of the key highlights of the initiative is the development of Diaspora City, a state-of-the-art tourism and cultural hub designed to facilitate investments and reconnect Africans in the diaspora with their roots. The project will feature museums, heritage sites, hotels, and cultural centers dedicated to preserving and celebrating Nigeria’s history.
- Cultural Exhibitions & Festivals: The initiative will introduce annual festivals and exhibitions showcasing Nigerian art, film, music, and fashion, with plans to host international collaborations.
- Creative Economy Boost: ‘Motherland 2025’ aims to support Nollywood, Afrobeats, and local artisans, providing funding, training, and networking opportunities for creatives to thrive in global markets.
- Heritage Tourism Expansion: Plans include the restoration and promotion of historic landmarks, such as the Slave Trade Route and ancient cultural sites, to attract cultural tourists and history enthusiasts.
With strong government backing and partnerships with the private sector, investors, and international organizations, ‘Motherland 2025’ is expected to drive job creation, foreign investments, and increased revenue for Nigeria’s economy. The program aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritizes economic diversification through culture and tourism.
According to tourism analyst Obinna Eze, the initiative is a game-changer for Nigeria:
“If implemented effectively, ‘Motherland 2025’ could position Nigeria as Africa’s top cultural and tourism hub, attracting millions of visitors annually.”
As Nigeria embarks on this ambitious journey, the success of ‘Motherland 2025’ will depend on policy execution, infrastructure development, and global marketing efforts. With its rich heritage and booming creative sector, the initiative holds the potential to redefine African tourism and place Nigeria at the forefront of global cultural engagement.
